In honor of White Cane Safety Day, we are pleased to announce the launch of our new project, Hosp4All, an initiative aimed at addressing mobility challenges faced by visually impaired individuals in healthcare environments.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 2.2 billion people worldwide experience some form of vision impairment. Many of them face significant difficulties navigating healthcare facilities, where complex layouts and inadequate accessibility infrastructure may limit their ability to move safely and independently. Recognizing the need for more inclusive healthcare facilities, the Hosp4All project aims to implement advanced indoor navigation systems designed to facilitate free movement for visually impaired individuals, while also improving navigation for the general population.
Project Partners
Hosp4All is a collaborative effort led by INBIT in partnership with:
- The Norwegian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted (NABP)
- The Regional Union of the Blind of Western Greece
- The University General Hospital of Patras
These partners combine their expertise in accessibility and healthcare, working collectively to ensure healthcare facilities meet the needs of all users, regardless of their physical abilities.
Project Objectives
The primary objective of Hosp4All is to adopt universal accessibility design in healthcare facilities. By utilizing advanced indoor navigation systems, the project seeks to create an environment where visually impaired patients can move independently and safely within healthcare spaces. Notably, the Hosp4All system is designed to benefit individuals without vision impairments as well, enhancing navigation and improving the overall functionality of hospitals.
Funding and Support
Hosp4All is funded by the EEA Grants 2014-2021—a funding mechanism supported by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway—and is backed by the Special Service of the Ministry of Health for NSRF Management (EDESPY).
